- Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System /Tsunami Early Warning Centres
Regional Tsunami Service ProvidersThe Regional Tsunami Service Providers in Australia, India and Indonesia have been in operation since October 2011. However with the undersea earthquake in 2004 and the subsequent strongest tsunami that came after it, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO) coordinated the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWS).
Under the IOTWS, the RTSPs (Australia, India and Indonesia) are the primary source of tsunami advisories for the Indian Ocean and to operate in parallel service with Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PWTC) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). However the parallel operation ended in 2012 and now the RTSPs (Australia, India and Indonesia) are the principal source of tsunami advisories for the Indian Ocean.
