1945 Makran Tsunami ESCAP Project Meeting

  Muscat, Oman
  10/20/2013
- 10/24/2013

The IOC UNESCO project on “Communicating the effects of the 1945 Makran tsunami to increase awareness and preparedness of tsunami hazards in the Makran region” is currently underway with funding from the ESCAP administered Trust Fund on Tsunami, Disaster and Climate Preparedness in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asian Countries. The project has been undertaking much-needed ground work for increasing public awareness of Makran tsunami hazards. To date historical document literature reviews and eye-witness interviews have been conducted in Oman, Iran and Pakistan and a mission to India scheduled for September 2013.

A project meeting will be held at the Airport Management Office, Muscat, Oman, 20-24 October 2013. The meeting will be hosted by the Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation (DGMAN).

The meeting will serve as a workshop with the primary goal of producing draft educational materials for coastal communities based on the material collected during county visits. This will include finalising the historical documents and eye witness accounts of the 1945 Makran tsunami for the IOC UNESCO website and drafting a public-safety lessons UNESCO booklet. These materials will help to improve policies to reduce further losses from tsunamis in Oman, Iran, Pakistan and India.
