Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System Integrated Meetings

At the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group (ICG) for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWMS), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 18-20 April 2017, it was agreed that integrated meetings of the Working Groups, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) training workshops, post-IOWave workshops, and Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) workshops will be held in order to optimize resources.

The first of these integrated meetings will be held at the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) in Jakarta, Indonesia between 4-17 September 2017 and will include the following meetings:

    Task Team on Capacity Assessment of Tsunami Preparedness (Task Team Members)
  • Wednesday, 6 September, Thursday, 7 September, Friday, 8 September
    Indian Ocean Tsunami Ready (IOTR) Workshop (DMOs of IOTWMS Member States)
  • Saturday, 9 September
    Inter-sessional Meeting of WG-1 on Tsunami Risk, Community Awareness & Preparedness (WG-1 Members)
  • Sunday 10 September

  • 11 September, 12 September, 13 September, 14 September
    National Tsunami Warning Centre’s (NTWC) – Disaster Management Organization’s (DMO) Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Workshop (DMOs and NTWCs of IOTWMS Member States)
  • 15 September
    Inter-sessional Meeting of WG-2 on Tsunami Detection, Warning & Dissemination (WG-2 Members)
  • 16 September
    IOWave 18 Task Team Meeting (Task Team Members)
  • 17 September
    IOTWMS Steering Group Meeting (Steering Group Members)

The Indian Ocean Tsunami Ready (IOTR) Workshop will explore how the existing guidelines can be adapted to best fit Indian Ocean communities and how pilot implementation can be undertaken in the interested Member States.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Workshop will aim to assist the ICG/IOTWMS Member States to develop integrated end-to-end SOPs for tsunami warning and emergency response; to assist DMOs to develop SOPs for implementing national and local responses to tsunami warnings issued by the NTWCs, and prepare the Member States to conduct the IOWave18 Exercise to be held in September 2018.
