Mozambique hosted training workshop on “Pre-IOWave16 Training/Workshop on Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness and Standard Operating Procedures for Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response in Mozambique“ on 13 to 17 June 2016. The training workshop was officially opened by Dr. Manuela J Rebelo, Deputy Minister of Ministry of transport and communication of the Republic of Mozambique following the remarks of Moussa-Elkadhum Djaffar, Head of Office and Representative to Mozambique, Mrs Candida Ines Sete Nahpulo, Director General of Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia of Mozambique and Ardito M Kodijat of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) of UNESCO/IOC.
The Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) of UNESCO/IOC in UNESCO Office Jakarta is implementing a project supported by Malaysian Funds-in-Trust,: “Fostering Tsunami Preparedness, Response and Mitigation in the Indian Ocean Small Island Developing States and Developing Countries”. The goal of this project is to strengthen the capacity of Indian Ocean Member States in tsunami preparedness and response to the tsunami early warning to contribute to the full implementation of the end to end tsunami early warning in the Indian Ocean that will save lives from a tsunami disaster in the future. This workshop is also align with the programme of the ICG/IOTWMS.
Through this project, and with the support of UNESCO Office Mozambique and Mozambique National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), this 5 days training/workshop was held in Cardoso Hotel in Maputo. 30 participants from national and local Mozambique organization / institutions working on Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness and Standard Operating Procedures for Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response participated in this training workshop. These participants was introduced on various topic to build preparedness among others overview of Tsunami Hazards and Tsunami Risk Reduction; Introduction to Tsunami Preparedness, as well as Standard Operating Procedures for Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response. The training workshop was facilitated by 5 trainers coming from ICG/IOTWMS secretariat, IOTIC, the Institute of Technology in Bandung Indonesia, and the Division for Disaster Risk Management of Seychelles.
As follow up of this training, it is expected that Mozambique institutions will actively participate in the Indian Ocean Wave Exercise 2016 (IOWave 16) that will be held internationally in the Indian Ocean Region on 7 and 8 September 2016.
