Regional Tsunami Service Providers

The Regional Tsunami Service Providers in Australia, India, and Indonesia have been in operation since October 2011. However, with the undersea earthquake in 2004 and the subsequent strongest tsunami that came after it, UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO) coordinated the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWS).

Under the IOTWS, the RTSPs (Australia, India, and Indonesia) are the primary source of tsunami advisories for the Indian Ocean and to operate in parallel service with Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PWTC) and Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). However the parallel operation ended in 2012 and now the RTSPs (Australia, India, and Indonesia) are the principal source of tsunami advisories for the Indian Ocean.
